Is CNC Machining Right for Your Part?
CNC machining is a subtractive process where a cutting tool removes material from a solid block, following a predefined cutting program. The result is a precise, finished part that can be made in any quantity, holding the same dimensions.
Unlike casting or injection molding, CNC machining requires minimal tooling investment. This makes it one of the most efficient routes to make metal and rigid plastic parts. Another key benefit is the economy of scale – the process is fast to repeat and consistent across batches, which means unit costs come down as volume goes up.
CNC machining is a strong fit when:
- Your production volumes are relatively low (10s to 100s), which makes machining a better choice than forging or casting (which typically requires MOQs in the thousands)
- Your part requires tight dimensional tolerances that casting or 3D printing cannot hold consistently
- Your design requires certain materials that aren’t easily cast or forged
- Part design is extremely simple geometrically, so CNC turning and cutting operations can be done even at high volumes with competitive pricing

The main advantages of CNC machining are its precision, repeatability and flexibility. It holds tight tolerances, can produce complex geometries, and works with many production-grade materials.
However, the process has clear limitations. Large or highly complex parts require longer cycle times, and may have design constraints — very deep cavities, undercuts and certain internal geometries can be outright impossible to machine.
